At Snakemoor You will find several
footpaths, a hay
meadow and a pond in addition to a variety of trees. There is an
increasing range of flowers starting with an attractive display
of snowdrops in February. The rare flower, the 'snakeshead'
fritillary, is becoming established in the lower end of the
meadow and may be seen in early May.
An area called Snakemoor Green is identified on the 1881
Haddenham Pre-Enclosure Map. This indicates that before 1825 the
path out of the village followed the route of the ditch. The
wetland area by the pond was one of the few uncultivated common
grazing pastures around Haddenham. |

More recently, the land was used for Haddenham's sewage
works, until 1970 when it became a tree nursery for Aylesbury
Vale District Council (AVDC). In 1987 Haddenham Parish Council
leased the 2 hectares of land from AVDC and work to develop and
enhance Snakemoor commenced.
A small group of volunteers manage Snakemoor on behalf of the
Parish. The work has been supported by many village donations,
some national awards and parish funds. The long term plan is to
establish Snakemoor as a permanent village amenity and
conservation area. |
